The short answer

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) is the closest major airport to Pompano Beach. The drive to our address, 3217 NE 9th St, Pompano Beach, FL 33062, is about 17 miles. Most of it is on I-95. With light traffic it takes around half an hour. At rush hour or on a holiday weekend, give yourself more.

Route 1: I-95 (fastest most of the time)

Leave the airport and follow signs for I-95 North. Stay on I-95 into Pompano Beach and take the Atlantic Boulevard exit. Head east on Atlantic Boulevard toward the ocean. You will cross Federal Highway and then the Intracoastal Waterway bridge before you reach the beach side of town. Put our address in your map app for the last few turns.

I-95 is the quickest choice outside rush hour. Weekday mornings and late afternoons can slow it to a crawl, especially around I-595 and Fort Lauderdale.

Route 2: Federal Highway (US-1)

Federal Highway runs north from the airport area through Fort Lauderdale and Oakland Park into Pompano Beach. It has more traffic lights than I-95, so it is usually slower, but it is a steady option when the interstate backs up. It also passes plenty of grocery stores, which helps if you want to stock the kitchen on the way in.

Route 3: A1A along the ocean

A1A follows the beach north from Fort Lauderdale through Lauderdale-by-the-Sea to Pompano Beach. It is the slowest route by a long way, with low speed limits and beach traffic, but it is the scenic one. If you land in the morning and have time to fill before check-in, it makes a good first drive.

Drive times vary with traffic, construction and season. Check a live map app before you leave the airport.

Rideshare and taxis

Rideshare pickups at FLL are on the lower level, in designated zones marked by signs along the curbs and columns. Follow the airport wayfinding signs from baggage claim. Taxis line up at the lower level too. A ride to Pompano Beach is roughly the same distance as driving yourself, so fares follow traffic and demand.

Rental cars

Most rental companies operate from the airport’s Rental Car Center. Follow the airport signs after baggage claim. A car is useful here for groceries and day trips, and parking at Pompano Breeze is free, one space per unit. See our parking details.

By train: Tri-Rail

If you are traveling light, the Tri-Rail commuter train is an option. A free shuttle runs from the FLL terminals to the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport at Dania Beach Tri-Rail station. Shuttle stops are on the lower Arrivals level. Ride Tri-Rail north to Pompano Beach station at 3301 NW 8th Ave, which is west of I-95, then take a taxi, rideshare or Broward County Transit bus east to the beach.

It takes longer than a car, and the last leg still needs a ride, so most families drive. It works well for solo travelers and couples.

Tri-Rail schedules and airport shuttle stops change. Check tri-rail.com and the FLL ground transportation page before you travel.

Arriving before check-in

Check-in is at 4 PM. If your flight lands in the morning, it is a good excuse for a slow lunch near the Pompano Beach Pier or a grocery stop on the way. Our list of restaurants near the pier has a few long-standing options. If you are running late, call or text us at (954) 256-1111. A real person answers.

Flying home

Check-out is at 10 AM. For a midday flight, leave plenty of time for I-95 traffic and the airport. If you want to see more of the coast on the way, our Fort Lauderdale guide has ideas for a last stop.

A grocery stop on the way

If you are staying a week or longer, a grocery run on the way in saves a second trip. Atlantic Boulevard and Federal Highway in Pompano Beach both have large supermarkets near the route from I-95, so you can pick up breakfast basics, snacks and drinks before you reach us. Our kitchens page lists what is in each unit, so you only buy what you need.

Other airports

FLL is the most convenient airport, but it is not the only one. Some guests find better fares into Palm Beach International (PBI) to the north or Miami International (MIA) to the south. Both are a longer drive, and I-95 traffic around Miami in particular can add a lot of time, so weigh the fare against the drive before you book.

Driving down from the north

Families driving from Central Florida or further north usually come down I-95 or Florida’s Turnpike. From I-95, take the Atlantic Boulevard exit and head east toward the ocean. From the Turnpike, cross over to I-95 or head east on Atlantic Boulevard directly.
